The Brief
The goal was to create a fun, visually engaging learning experience that could serve as a “one-stop shop” for longboarding basics.
Inspired by my own journey into longboarding and the curiosity of my nephews who were just getting into it, I set out to design something that answered real beginner questions in an intuitive, friendly way. It also served as a way to demonstrate my capability in building meaningful eLearning experiences from concept to completion.
Design & Analysis
The learning structure was guided by an understanding of beginner needs and common questions, shaped by real conversations with new riders. The module covers key areas such as:
Choosing the right longboard
Longboard parts and maintenance
Basic techniques and foot positioning
Tips to build confidence early on
The content was broken into short, interactive sections that allow learners to explore at their own pace. Each section was designed with clarity and progression in mind, supporting knowledge-building through small, engaging steps.
Storytelling & Design
This project has a playful and inviting tone, created to appeal to a younger audience as well as adults looking to try something new. The visuals are bright and bold, bringing in elements of longboarding culture to enhance relatability and interest.
The design draws inspiration from my memories of summer weekends spent longboarding with my nephews along coastal paths and quite carparks. I wanted to convey this energy through a lively mix of colour, texture and imagery: graffiti-style spray paint, woodgrain textures, and a vibrant palette of teal and yellow create a fun vibe.
Combining photo-based visuals with custom graphics gave the module a dynamic, layered aesthetic. Every design choice was made to evoke the excitement of picking up a board for the first time, and trying to capture that feeling of freedom and joy at the heart of longboarding.
Create & Develop
The module was built in Articulate Storyline 360, with a focus on creating a highly interactive experience through custom branching and detailed visual feedback. A fully tailored menu allowed learners to choose their own path, giving them autonomy while tracking progress in a visually engaging way. Each lesson button was programmed with custom states—when a section was completed, a bold graffiti-style spray mark appeared across the button, creating a clear and satisfying sense of progression.
Throughout the module, I used a variety of interaction types including drag-and-drop, click-to-reveal, matching pairs, and hotspot activities, all supported by custom graphics and cursor styling. These elements were carefully designed to reflect the energetic tone of the module while enhancing usability and engagement. The result is a dynamic, learner-led experience that brings together technical skill, creativity, and thoughtful user experience design.
